I Cannot Get Enough of God’s Love – A Steamy Look at Love

How beautiful you are, my darling!
    Oh, how beautiful!
    Your eyes behind your veil are doves.
Your hair is like a flock of goats
    descending from the hills of Gilead.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn,
    coming up from the washing.
Each has its twin;
    not one of them is alone.
Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon;
    your mouth is lovely.
Your temples behind your veil
    are like the halves of a pomegranate.
Your neck is like the tower of David,
    built with courses of stone;
on it hang a thousand shields,
    all of them shields of warriors.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
    like twin fawns of a gazelle
    that browse among the lilies.
Until the day breaks
    and the shadows flee,
I will go to the mountain of myrrh
    and to the hill of incense.
You are altogether beautiful, my darling;
    there is no flaw in you.

  • Song of Solomon 4:1-7

He
I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride;
    I have gathered my myrrh with my spice.
I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey;
    I have drunk my wine and my milk.
Friends
Eat, friends, and drink;
    drink your fill of love.
She
I slept but my heart was awake.
    Listen! My beloved is knocking:
“Open to me, my sister, my darling,
    my dove, my flawless one.
My head is drenched with dew,
    my hair with the dampness of the night.”

  • Song of Solomon 5:1-2

How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
    my love, with your delights!

  • Song of Solomon 7:6

Place me like a seal over your heart,
    like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
    its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
    like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;
    rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
    all the wealth of one’s house for love,
    it would be utterly scorned.

  • Song of Solomon 8:6-7

I’ve heard people say that
Too much of anything is not good for you, baby
(Oh no) but I don’t know about that
There’s many times that we’ve loved
We’ve shared love and made love
It doesn’t seem to me like it’s enough
There’s just not enough of it
There’s just not enough
Oh oh, babe
My darling I, can’t get enough of your love babe
Girl, I don’t know, I don’t know why
I can’t get enough of your love babe
Oh, some things I can’t get used to
No matter how I try
Just like the more you give, the more I want
And baby, that’s no lie
Oh no, babe
Tell me, what can I say?
What am I gonna do?
How should I feel when everything is you?
What kind of love is this that you’re givin’ me?
Is it in your kiss or just because you’re sweet?

  • Barry White, Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe

What do you these things have to do with each other?  Are some of you getting a little creeped out about now?  But whether you call it Song of Songs or Song of Solomon, it is the intimate love and deep relationship that God has for us, without the sexual overtones.

Well, I just finished my comments on Ezekiel 23, about the two sisters who became prostitutes which represent Samaria and Judah.  I wrote about how we should talk about those uncomfortable subjects.  But I was also thinking of an upcoming Deviled Yeggs mystery, a love story, of sorts, touching on other aspects of relationships that are often not spoken.

Then, I woke up this morning with an earworm.  Barry White singing, Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe. And this is a remix. I doubt if Barry White could change clothing and hair styles that fast.

Let’s forget the physical love making that is laced through Barry White’s lyrics.  What Barry White is saying in this song can, to an extent, speak of God’s love for us and how we should respond with our love for Him.

Have you ever heard people say that “too much of anything is a bad thing?”  Have they never experienced God’s love?

I would love to say that I have gotten used to God’s love, but it is something that I do not deserve.  How could I ever get used to it?  The more God gives, the more of His love I want, and that’s no lie.

Why do we fixate on what we need to do?  We are always wanting to earn that love that is given without strings attached.  What can I say?  What am I gonna do?  We are like Peter at the Mount of Transfiguration, wanting to build tabernacles, but God gives us His love when we accept Him into out hearts.  He gives it freely.  The doing happens afterwards, when we share God’s love with others.  No doing required for salvation, but plenty of doing when God’s love overflows from our hearts.

And the next line is what I feel each day.  “How should I feel when everything is You?”

Amen and amen.

“What kind of love is this that You’re givin’ me?  Is it in your kiss or just because You’re sweet?”

Okay, we don’t often think of God giving us a kiss, but in many ways He does.  His love is sweet.  When I have had a really bad day, He is great at warm, comforting hugs, too.

And while the next few lines have distinct sexual overtones in the Barry White lyrics, they fit.  When God is near me and I feel His presence, I start to change; something moves within me as my heart yearns for more of God, and then it all makes sense when I surrender and tell God, “Do what You got to do.”  When my will becomes God’s will in my life, wonderful and powerful things happen.  When I surrender and I am doing what God wants of me, I feel ecstasy beyond words.

God’s love for me is all I need and it is more than I can stand.  God is real, but His love is not like anything in this fallen world, but I keep loving God.  God blows my mind.

I think of when I searched for God’s love.  I desired His love that I might have just searched my life to find You and “it’s gonna take the rest of my life to keep You.”

As I looked at the ceiling while my eyes still could not focus, I searched beyond the ceiling to the sky, beyond the sky to the heavens, to the very throne of God.

“Oh no, Jesus
I can’t get enough of Your love, Jesus
And, I know why, I know why, I know why
I can’t get enough of Your love, Jesus.”

  • My modification of Barry White’s lyrics

I love You because You first loved me, and You gave Your Life for me, and I can work my whole life for You, and I could never repay that debt.

Now THAT was a great way to start the day!

And while we are thinking of Barry White and we are thinking of love, why not end with a little theme music, Love’s Theme.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.

  1. I had to read the lyrics again for “Can’t get enough of your love, Babe,” because as I scanned over the credit being given to Barry White, I thought I read Betty White. I know she gets around, but I couldn’t imagine her singing those words. Anyway, I’ll be less flippant as I read from now on. Thought you’d get a kick out of it though.
