Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Matthew 5:1-12
I am giving major hints in this quiz. Some immediately, as in… What follows the Scripture above in the Sermon on the Mount, in the next four verses? I added that prepositional phrase at the end to avoid getting the answer: Matthew 5:13 for the answer. And for the comedians out there, I am not looking for Matthew 5:13-16 either.
This quiz has only one question for the ultimate answers to the quiz. Jesus follows the Beatitudes by saying that we are “something” of the world and He explains what that something is, but then he follows that with another statement that we are “something else” of the world and He explains that also. We are really supposed to be two things so that we can share the Gospel, the Good News that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and we can have salvation only through Him. What are we to be for the world?
But if you do not want to just look those verses up to solve the ultimate question, if you did not already know, you can solve it by answering some of the questions in the questions section. There are two questions on each row. In the center of the table is space for the starting letter of the answers on that row. All you need to do is answer one of the two questions correctly. The ultimate answers will then be spelled in the nine spaces down the center, from top to bottom.
Wow! I did not think I would create a “mediocrity quiz,” but you can really get less than half the questions answered to get the ultimate two answers by logically figuring out what the letters are after answering a few of the questions. But in writing this quiz, if you do not know an answer, the ultimate goal of these quizzes are not to have you know everything. Please look up what you do not already know.
The Bible Reference Section will give the Bible Verses for the eighteen questions. The Bible Reference for the ultimate quiz answers is already given, the four verses that follow Matthew 5:12.

There are a lot of “I AM” statements in Jesus’ teachings, but Jesus does not expect us to sit idly by after we have accepted Him as our Savior. We are to preserve others for the kingdom. We are to illuminate the Gospel for those around us.
Like I said, a lot of hints.

You can see that some of these Bible references are the same, and oddly, two of these answers relate to each other and, for the questions, different books of the Bible are given.
I will answer one of the ultimate answers early. We are the SALT of the world. Most people think of salt as a spice. Many people do not use table salt due to the adverse health effects. Scientists are trying to find something better that rock salt to de-ice the roads, but in the time of Jesus, throughout the Roman empire, salt was nearly as valuable, maybe more so than gold. Wars were started to obtain the rights to salt mines. But this value was as a preservative, not to enhance the flavor of the food. The photo above is of Mirabel Gardens in Salzburg, Austria and the Salzburg castle is on the hill in the background. The confluence of rivers at Salzburg meant this was a key location for salt from mines in the mountains to be gathered and protected until shipped downstream. With this information, Matthew 5:13 does not have a changed meaning on the surface, but in being salt for someone else, we could be preserving them from Hell’s Lake of Fire.

I hope you did well on this quiz. Not all the answers were easy, but there should have been enough clues to make it through. Jesus calls us to be both salt (a preservative) and light (to illuminate the way for others). There are many ways to do that, but we must prepare by studying God’s Word and praying continually.
This first video is a song by Lauren Daigle, Salt & Light.
And here is Jami Smith singing Salt and Light.
And here is Wes King singing Salt of the Earth.
