these I will bring to my holy mountain
and give them joy in my house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called
a house of prayer for all nations.”
- Isaiah 56:7
“It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
- Matthew 21:13
This quiz has only one question for the ultimate answer to the quiz. What do all twelve of the verses have in common? Actually, there are two answers, but they can be stated in one sentence.
But if you do not want to just look those verses up to solve the ultimate question, if you did not already know, you can solve it by answering some of the questions in the questions section. There are two questions on each row. In the center of the table is space for the starting letter of the answers on that row. All you need to do is answer one of the two questions correctly. The ultimate answer, the intended thing these have in common, will then be spelled in the six spaces down the center, from top to bottom.
All the questions are fill in the blank questions. All the verses are quoted from the NIV. Please, do not get tripped up on some of the very simple words. Two answers are the same answer, on different rows. You might find a pronoun. You might find a simple verb. You might find a preposition. You might find multiples of these. Once you get how this quiz is set up, you might appreciate the obscure words that are missing.
The Bible Reference Section will give the Bible Verses for the twelve questions.
The Questions:

And again, “____ will put my trust in him.” | For he says, “____ the time of my favor I heard you, and ____ the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. [Note: Same answer given twice] | |||

“He has blinded their eyes and hardened their ____, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.” | “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been ____.” |
There are many people today who state that they do not like the God of the Old Testament. They will only read the New Testament. But the New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, so much so that it quotes the Old Testament, often.
From the Bible Reference section, you will easily find one thing that these verses all have in common. They all are in the New Testament.

But what else is common about these verses? Have you answered enough of the questions to decipher the ultimate question?
But why do the two testaments connect with each other? The Old Testament points toward Jesus. The New Testament tells of Jesus and our responsibility to spread His message that God loves us throughout the world.

The Scriptures at the top are a big hint.
The “hidden” word is Isaiah.
The ultimate answer is that all the verses, found in this quiz, are from the New Testament and they contain, or are, quotes from the book of Isaiah. In the answer columns, the chapter verse reference in parenthesis is the chapter and verse in Isaiah that the New Testament author had quoted.
Do not get me wrong. I enjoyed writing this quiz, even in the frantic last two or three words. But it was not easy. Some of my favorite verses in Isaiah to quote did not meet my criteria. For the verses to be used in the quiz, the key word, the word used to fill in the blank, had to be in Isaiah and the verse of the New Testament. But the NIV often translated that specific word as something else, translating from Hebrew and translating from Greek resulting in a slight difference in wording. The words meant the same, but I felt that I needed an exact match for the quiz. Thus, we had the pronoun “I” twice and the preposition “In.” If we do this again, I anticipate a similar issue.
Credit: A special shoutout to SimplyBible.com who had a listing of Isaiah Scripture that is quoted in the New Testament. I could have gotten there on my own, but their list saved a lot of time.
