In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
- Job 33:15
I have written a few times recently about not catching up on my sleep. I thought really hard about a quiz topic and the thought of deep sleep came to mind. There are twelve verses in the Bible where “deep sleep” is in the verse. I just used two of them, so I hope I can make a question out of each of the other ten.
If I fail, I hope I do not lose any sleep over it.
Actually, one of the remaining verses has “deep” and “sleep” in the same verse, but it does not say “deep sleep.”

In the Bible, “deep sleep” might mean deep enough to do surgery or it might mean deep enough to see visions and dream dreams.
But in sleep studies, there are different types of sleep. Health monitoring watches that monitor deep sleep are looking for movement and heart rate. When the heart rate slows to a steady rate, the watch tracks sleep, but deep sleep is considered when there is no movement and the heart rate is low and steady. That could be simple deep sleep or it could be REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) when the body is essentially paralyzed. Either way, the deep sleep detected by the watch is considered the restful sleep.
From my experience, some of the light sleep is not sleep at all. I can awaken in the night and decide to not get out of bed, but I will get the tablet out and check on things like this blogsite or read the Bible or do some research. In the morning, the watch, since I never got up and walked around, considers that light sleep.
As for deep sleep, I struggle if I do not get about three and a half hours of deep sleep. My body simply does not get enough rest. Nearing five hours of deep sleep, I often have trouble waking up completely. My best days are when I get four to four and a half hours of deep sleep each night, regardless of how much light sleep I get. Note: I almost always get more light sleep than deep sleep, but there are some blessed nights when… I think God knows I need the deep sleep and I will get four hours of deep sleep with only two hours of light sleep. That little total sleep indicates waking up early to take my wife for dialysis.

- Matthew 11:28
Are you not getting enough sleep, or at least enough restful sleep? Go to God. Jesus promises us the rest that we need. He might not deliver every night, but I have learned that I do not need a lot of deep sleep every night. Three bad nights in a row, however, usually leads to a totally unproductive day. But I usually get a great night’s sleep that night.
