This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up.
- Amos 7:1
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
- Matthew 14:15
“‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.
- Ezekiel 16:8
Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.
- Jeremiah 42:7
The title of the quiz is a confession, in that two Sundays ago, I was a little late getting to the classroom to teach Sunday school. I am a stickler for being on time, and I made a horrible mistake. The class on the other hand did a great job. They started with class in the usual fashion, and they were just finishing the Bible reading for that class when I slipped into the room. My wife fell back to sleep that morning after breakfast, and without her making noise, as in getting ready to leave, I had no visual or audible cues to stop what I was doing. The time simply floated by.
The word “late” appears in 93 verses in the Bible (NIV), but almost all in the word “later,” usually meaning something happened after something else happened, like me showing up to teach class after class had started. “Late” by itself accounts for seven times, with two of those above. Late crops and late in the day are two totally different concepts. “Lately” appears twice and “Latest” appears once in the NIV, and you may see that below. All the verses that the questions are based on have the words late, later, lately, or latest in them.
When I make a confession, I own up to my mistake, and maybe that will help me to do better in the future.

I have written about it in the past, that we should be fifteen minutes early, or we are late. There is NO EXCUSE that can be accepted.
Well, I was late. My old boss may be right about industrial training. If the teacher does not show up on time, class does not start. But when I rounded the corner to see the doors of my Sunday school room closed, I got a little nervous. And as I entered, one of the ladies saw the guilt on my face and she chuckled and said, “Don’t worry, we know what to do.” They had started class without me.
So, if I kick the bucket, I know that the class will go on.
But I was still mortified for letting the time slip away.
I was once teased about a fellow in the same group that I was in that I was unable to get my teammate to the meeting on time, so what did I have to offer to the rest of the company. I asked if these guys, who were eating pizza like it was the last meal they would ever eat, “Have you ever heard the expression that someone will be late for their own funeral?” They said they had. I replied, “Well, my teammate will have to be buried in somebody else’s spot. He’ll be so late, that the next casket will show up and the grave diggers will ask why bother digging another hole? So if you go see my teammate, don’t bother looking for his tombstone. He ain’t there.”
About this time, my teammate showed up and said, “Ha, ha, ha!”
Then one of the other guys added, “… Said the guy who showed up when there was only veggie pizza left.”
After the laughter died down, the conversation switched to: Why do they bother making veggie pizza in the first place?

I have often written that when the gates of Heaven open, I will be running toward them, just in case the gates might close. A couple of the songs at the end of the post are about when it is too late. You should never wait because tomorrow may be too late.
If the Holy Spirit is talking to you right now and you know that you should surrender your life to Jesus Christ, there is no better time than right now.
Recognize that you have sinned. Repent of your sin and accept Jesus into your heart.
Hallelujah!
