I was having a few days of bad headaches and my writing was sporadic. I would rest in the recliner, occasionally falling asleep. Then I would think of great post ideas, including some great ideas for quizzes.
But before I could get my notebook out and write the ideas down, they were gone.
I looked at the ceiling and said, “Rescue me, Lord!”
So here I am writing a quiz about “rescue.” The word “rescue” appears 129 times in the NIV, and a few of those are as story titles, including the rescue of Lot by Abraham (but not in the inspired Scripture). Of the 129 mentions, only 15 are in the New Testament. Usually the reference to “rescue” is about God rescuing His chosen people, either by God’s own hand or by raising up a champion among the people.

God does not simply save us so that we can be with Him in Heaven for eternity. God rescues us from the various issues we find ourselves. This does not mean that we do not suffer. Many times, God may rescue us from something, but there are consequences that result from our actions, such as getting into oppressive debt or substance abuse.
Sometimes, God allows us to enter tests and troubles as a test of faith. Will we turn away or will we go to Him for rescue. When you realize that is what is happening, it can be a comfort. We know God cares enough for us to have us tested.
That may seem counterintuitive, but God is not seeing for Himself if we will falter as much as He is teaching us the proper thing to do when those tests bombard us. We are to ask Jesus to stand by us. We are to lean on Jesus. And we are to ask Jesus to rescue us. (A hint to three of the upcoming tunes at the end)

Whether you did well on this quiz or, not so well, here is Rescue Me sung by Fontella Bass. It is a classic R&B song, but it would work as a Gospel song. It talks of someone who is “lonely” and needs love in their life. Sounds like Jesus would be the answer. Please, Lord, rescue me.
And you may like this one, Ben E. King, Stand By Me.
Or maybe Lean On Me, sung by John Legend, Stevie Wonder, and Bill Withers.
And who will rescue us? Who will stand by us? Who can we lean on? Here is Defender sung by the Liberty University Worship Concert.

Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
I have been rescued many times in my life, but didn’t do very well on this test.

That’s okay. When being rescued, thinking of Bible verses with the word “rescue” is probably not at the forefront of out mind.
