Winning by a Nose Quiz

So the Lord brought against them the army commanders of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh prisoner, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon.

  • 2 Chronicles 33:11

They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.

  • Psalm 115:6

Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.

  • Isaiah 37:29

I will direct my jealous anger against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and your ears, and those of you who are left will fall by the sword. They will take away your sons and daughters, and those of you who are left will be consumed by fire.

  • Ezekiel 23:25

This quiz is about the “nose.”  All the verses will have the word “nose” in them.  We have had a quiz recently about odors, smells, aromas, and just plain stink.  We have had a quiz about the eyes.  So here goes with the nose.

I thought of this idea when I could not think of a quiz topic this morning and then suddenly, I started chain sneezing for about 2-3 minutes (but it felt like it much longer).  I hope you do well on the quiz, but if you stumble, may you win by a nose.

The Questions:

#QuestionBible ReferenceAnswer
1One of Abraham’s servants gave a young woman a gold nose ring and two golden bracelets.  Who and for what purpose?
2When the brother of the woman in question one saw the jewelry (and probably, a chance to get some for himself), who suddenly became hospitable, offering the stranger a place to stay and provisions for his camels?
3Who, in the numbered history books, prophesied against Sennacherib, prophesying his fall, which included a hook in his nose?
4What great beast did the Lord tell Job no one had pierced its nose?
5What great beast did the Lord tell Job had no one ever placed a cord through its nose?
6In Proverbs, what two metaphors does the author use for anger creating strife?  Two things that cause two other things.  Only one relates to the nose.
7In the male lover’s description of the Shulammite woman, he describes her neck like an ivory tower, her eyes like pools of Heshbon, but what about her nose?
8In the Isaiah prophecy of God’s judgment of Judah and Jerusalem, there is a long list of things God will snatch.  What two types of rings?
9When Ezekiel is taken in the Spirit to the Temple to show him the abominations done by the priests there, what did the priest, at one point, raise to his nose?
10Ezekiel recounts how God had lavished great wealth onto Jerusalem which included a crown and what two types of rings?

If you are like me, and I do hope you are not, you have had your nose broken, mine three times.  You do not realize what a broken nose can lead to in later life.  We have the sermons from our parents (and safety managers) about taking care of your eyes.  You only have two eyes.  I got lectures from my commanding officer in the military about protecting my hearing.  You only have two ears, and I almost asked “What?!?!” when the colonel said that.  I had just been firing an M-60 machine gun, but since I was squad leader that day, I had to keep my earplugs out to hear the ceasefire signal.  I heard very little of the colonel’s speech.  But they filmed me cutting down a tree using an M-60 machine gun from 200m away.  The safety manager lectures folks on the fingers and toes.

But the nose?  Hardly ever, if ever.  But a mild cold or sinus issue becomes a totally clogged nose.  The scar tissue constantly puts pressure on the sinuses, making those issues chronic.  And your wife tells you after nearly fifty years of marriage, “Your face is lopsided, but I’m used to it now.”

This pretty much exhausted the verses about the nose.  There was one more verse, but it related to a couple of the questions already in the quiz.

A hint for question five might be that when I caught a fish and added it to the stringer (a cord with a spike on the end to secure it), I usually weaved the cord through the fish’s mouth and out the gills rather than messing with the fish’s nose.  Funny how some things do not change that much in, say, 4,000 years.

In question seven, the male lover even gives the direction that the Shulammite woman is looking.  My perverse sense of humor must ask the question, “What happens if she turns around?”

The answers to questions 8 and 10 are different.  Okay, half the answer is different while the other half relates to the topic.  And that is basically giving away half credit.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, not so well, here is Rich Mullins singing The Maker of Noses.  I agree with him in that we usually follow the direction that our nose takes, but you can go a different direction, briefly, until you walk or drive into something.  Just another reason to not text while driving or change the station on the radio, etc.

Here is the Oak Ridge Boys singing Did I Make a Difference.  Regardless of whether we follow our nose or our hearts or our dreams, are you making a difference in God’s kingdom?

Here is Jimmy Durante, thinking of noses, okay, thinking of noses with their own zip code, singing As Time Goes By.  And the Lennon Sisters accompany him.

And here is another person who was known for his nose. Bob Hope and Shirley Ross singing Thanks for the Memories. Me being nostalgic, I guess.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
