I Spy with my little Eye Quiz

Baal-Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore-fig trees in the western foothills. Joash was in charge of the supplies of olive oil.

  • Exodus 9:32

It has laid waste my vines and ruined my fig trees. It has stripped off their bark and thrown it away, leaving their branches white.

  • Joel 1:7

All your fortresses are like fig trees with their first ripe fruit; when they are shaken, the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.

  • Nahum 3:12

During the night I had a vision, and there before me was a man mounted on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in a ravine. Behind him were red, brown and white horses.

  • Zechariah 1:8

This quiz is not about trees, but you could easily see trees while driving down the road from Tennessee, through Mississippi and Louisiana, and into Texas.  For those who are not familiar with this part of the USA, Mississippi is a hilly, forested state with scattered farms as is the area just south of Mississippi.  SW Louisiana is rice growing country, flat, swampy at times, Cajun country, and the billboards advertise various types of seafood.  Of course, the Mississippi River and other rivers must be crossed.  The part of Texas that we visited was the Gulf Coast area with access to the bays, waterways, and such.

When our boys were growing up, my wife loved to play the “I Spy with my Little Eye” game.  You say that phrase and give a clue.  Then the boys look for something that matches that clue.  For her, the clue usually was the color, thus teaching colors.  Or it started with a letter. The game has been around since Victorian England days, although a book was written by that name in 2011.

In this quiz, I have ten Bible verses with one word missing, replaced with a blank.  I could just call this a fill-in-the-blank quiz, but it is themed.  The missing words, a different word for each question, are things that you might “spy with your little eye” on a trip from Tennessee to the Gulf Coast of Texas.  Remember that some things might be a picture on a billboard, like a common food item in that area.  I doubt if crawfish is in the Bible.  There are a lot of billboards advertising crawfish.  The description of the area is in the paragraph two up from this one.

One of the answers reminds me of a bridge that we cross on that journey, a bridge between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Louisiana, further to the west).  Once we reach this thing (the answer to the question) we get on the bridge, and we do not get off the bridge for over eighteen miles.  There are two exits along the way, but one has no facilities and the other is a state park (a place to launch fishing boats mostly).

On our way home, my son saw the bridge approaching and he groaned.  He thought there was an exit just before the bridge (actually going the other direction).  He had to go to the restroom and now he knew he would have to hold on for about twenty minutes (the speed limit is reduced on the bridge).

About halfway across the bridge, you pass over another answer in the quiz.  This other thing is specifically the diversion channel if the Mississippi River gets too much above flood stage.  The diversion floods some farmland, but it saves Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana from getting flooded, but this diversion channel has water in it all the time.

The reason for our trip was to attend a memorial service for my wife’s brother who had passed away in mid-August, but we got to visit with relatives that we had not seen since the last death in the family.  We were supposed to have gone to a family reunion the year after my mother-in-law passed away, but I had kidney stones and the follow-up procedure to remove a stent was the Friday of the weekend of the reunion.

It was a good thing that we did not go.  We would have been at a lake, far from the nearest hospital, when my wife had a gall stone block off the gall bladder, liver, and pancreas.  The stone shifted before it became a dire emergency, but the subsequent testing to schedule gall bladder surgery led to open-heart surgery instead.

Instead of my wife playing “I spy with my little eye” with our grandchildren on this latest trip, they had a DVD player and the youngest watched movies.  Travel has changed a lot in my lifetime.  I learned a lot by looking out the window and spying with my little eyes.
