When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
- Matthew 16:13-18
“Seeing the duck, the little bird flew down upon on the grass
Settled next to her, and shrugged his shoulders. “What kind of bird
Are you if you can’t fly?” said he. To this, the duck replied “What
Kind of bird are you if you can’t swim?” and dived into the pond
They argued and argued, the duck swimming in the pond and the
Little bird hopping along the shore
Suddenly, something caught Peter’s attention. It was a cat
Crawling through the grass”
- Sergei Prokofiev, Peter and the Wolf, Lyrics from Op. 67
This quiz is really two quizzes. One quiz is a Bible Quiz about men in the Bible, hopefully straightforward. The other quiz is a Classic (sort of) Literature Quiz about male characters in these works of Classic Literature. The key thing is that the answers in one quiz are the same as the answers in the other quiz. It is just that the Bible quiz is in Biblical Order, according to the Bible Reference, and the Classic Literature Quiz has the answers in alphabetical order, a big hint if you need it. If you are unsure of one quiz answer, the matching answer in the other quiz should help.
And if you are disappointed in not having women in the quiz, I was thinking of “the little princess” of the Bolkovsky family in War and Peace. And it would be easy to match unless you had two, so the other was going to be the moral busybody in Anne of Green Gables. Okay, the first matches Mary’s cousin who is the mother of John the Baptist (Baptizer). The other matches the sister that Jacob thought he was marrying, but instead he married her older sister and had to work another seven years for the second sister, the one he wanted. (Do I need to state Elizabeth and Rachel (as in Rachel Lynde)?) Of course, Leah is a minor character in Jane Eyre, but that also illustrates the problem. Too bad there are not any Janes and Annes or a Catherine (as in Wuthering Heights) in the Bible.
And my female example illustrates a little literary license that I have used in the matching. Elizabeth, the little princess, uses the Russian version of the name. Some people may have one name on their birth certificate and go by a shortened version. Let us say that an answer could be Richard. If the Biblical character of Richard could be used, the literary character could be Rich, Rick, or even Dick. So, the judge, priest, and prophet, Samuel, would match Sam Spade. And make a note of some of these examples as this was a fun quiz to write, but the next one may be more obscure.

This quiz was borne out of a case of mistaken identity. I was reading about Phinehas, mentioned in question 4 above. With his son being of the same name as a Classic Literature character, I thought Phinehas was also. But in the Jules Verne novel, Around the World in 80 Days, the hero is Phileas Fogg, not Phineas Bogg. But I had heard of the character, Phineas Bogg!!! I looked it up and Phineas Bogg was a time traveler on the short-lived television show, Voyager! – short-lived when the main character accidentally killed himself, not knowing that the packing in a blank pistol could be just as deadly as a bullet at close range.
That got me thinking of my favorite Classic Literature stories that I read in school. We could not read a Hardy Boys book and give a book report. We had to read a novel from their list of classics. When my boys were in school, the list had changed, maybe school by school differences. I remember one list that had The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man, both novels by Dashiell Hammett, and neither had been on my classics list in school.

I wonder if you were like me? It bothered me that I had to read a book from a list. I wanted to read what I liked reading. I like historical fiction, mysteries, and adventures.
But, ah, I then chose the Mark Twain novels and memoires on the list. I chose the Captain Horatio Hornblower novels. One of my favorite novels was Baroness Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel. Then the novels of Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne. My most ambitious six-week oral book report was War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. In knowing that this was a monumental task in such a short time, and English being only one of many subjects, the teacher let me use the abridged version. I still think it was around 2,000 pages. Odd, I did that in six weeks, getting an “A”, but most people think it is impossible to read the Bible in a year’s time.
The classics are great, but reading the Bible is very important. The Bible, even by its name, is a collection of books. There is adventure. There is romance. There is history, poetry, and songs. And we get to know the Creator of the universe.

Here is Joshua Sherman singing Psalm 23 (I am not Alone).
Here is the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church (Virtual Choir – probably during the COVID lockdown) singing In Christ There Is No East or West.
After the first psalm, Psalm 91 composed by Moses, the other three songs are written, maybe initially, by people who have the same name as some of the question’s answer: Sir Isaac Watts, King David (Psalm 23), and John Oxenham.
