This quiz is on tables.  The word “table” is mentioned about one hundred times in the NIV.  If you search for “table”, you get tablet also, which is mentioned 37 times.  Remove that and you get 100, but there may be another word in the mix also that I did not find.

All the verses in this quiz have the word table in them.

The Questions:

#QuestionBible ReferencesAnswer
1In the first mention of table (in Scripture) in the NIV, Joseph (although his brothers did not know he was Joseph) set a table for his brothers and one brother got five times as much as any of the others.  Which brother?
2Once God dictates exactly how the Ark of the Covenant is to be built, God tells Moses to have a table built, covered in gold, made of acacia wood, etc.  What was to be placed on the table before the Lord at all times?
3The table in the previous question is to be placed inside the Tabernacle, just outside the curtain of the Most Holy Place.  What is supposed to be placed on the opposite side, outside the curtain?
4What did Jonathan tell his father, King Saul, when David did not appear at the king’s table?
5Which of the psalms talks of God preparing a place for him in the presence of his enemies?
6Where was Jesus and what was He doing when a woman poured an alabaster jar of expensive perfume on Jesus’ head?
7Jesus overturned tables in anger when visiting the temple.  What group of people were at those tables?
8What behavior of the Pharisees did Jesus notice which prompted Him to tell the Parable of the Great Banquet, where the honored guests were making excuses and the master eventually sent his servants into the streets to gather people to enjoy his feast?
9The apostles created the first group of deacons, because it would not be good to neglect the ministry of the Word to do what?
10When the Apostle Paul speaks of the Lord’s Supper in one of his letters to the Corinthians, he says that we cannot have two masters.  We cannot have a part in the Lord’s Table and what else?

NOTE: The first question makes the distinction of the first time the word “table” was mentioned in the Scriptures in the NIV.  The translators of the NIV added section headings.  When you are skimming through for a specific story or event or teaching, these headings can become helpful if you do not know which chapter in the book has the information that you are looking for.  BUT, these headings are not part of the original text, thus not God-breathed.  In a heading, the word “table” is used in Genesis 10:1, The Table of Nations, or really, the descendants of Noah’s three sons, which established many of the nations on earth.

Since, in the USA, the Thanksgiving Day weekend is approaching, at least when this quiz is scheduled, we may have people coming to our table that we do not see that often.  Maybe you are hosting guests from another country as my wife and I did one year.  Maybe you are going to the church and serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless, the people who receive food from the food bank, the handicapped, or people in the nursing homes.  We have been a part of those mission projects in churches over the years for either one, another, or a combination of needy groups.

But the invitation is always there to come to the Lord’s Table, to eat the bread and drink the wine, in remembrance of Him.  Which causes all the other things that we are thankful for to pale in comparison.  Those other things are reminders that God is still there, and He cares for us in a very specific way.

There is a question in this quiz that gives the idea that some places at a formal dining table were more prestigious than other places.

In the military, they had formal dinners of that sort.  Just as Jesus taught, we were taught in the military to seek the least favorable position to sit and then have the host elevate you to a more favorable place.  Instead, you might have to be embarrassed by being taken to a lower position.

So, with nametags at each table, I found our table which had places for all the officers in the battalion.  I outranked all the second lieutenants (although the joke was that there was no rank distinction among lieutenants) and I had more time in grade (a 1LT for a longer time) than most of the other first lieutenants.  I thought that I might be sitting next to, or near, the captains.  When I dutifully got to the center of this monstrously long table, seating more than one hundred people, there my name was and my wife’s name right beside mine.  The second lieutenants made apologies and the prevailing excuse was that since I was to be part of the entertainment later on, my absence would not disrupt the table conversation.  My wife loved sitting there.  She would have been uncomfortable with higher ranking officer’s wives.  It is funny saying that in that my last employer had Christmas parties each year and my wife and I were usually placed with the CEO, the president, and other stuffed shirts because my wife could find common ground to have a conversation with just about anyone.  The company administrative assistant felt that no one else in the company would feel comfortable sitting with the big wigs.
