Superhero Mystery Quiz

These are the names of David’s mighty warriors:
Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the Israelites retreated, but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.
During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

  • 2 Samuel 23:8-17

Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.

  • Nehemiah 3:16

As I hinted last week, I thought of something while requesting ideas.  I like the mystery word or series quizzes.  And last week, I thought of some letters of the alphabet with a lot of people having a name that starts with a few of those letters.  As I rearranged those letters, I thought of a word.  It is four letters and the first letters of the answers spell out the word three times.  They will answer the following three questions:

What does Superman wear that Aquaman does not wear? (both DC Comic superheroes)

What does Batman wear that Captain America does not wear? (mixing DC Comics with Marvel Comics)

What does Storm wear that Spiderman does not wear? (both Marvel Comic superheroes)

Of course, if you love reading superhero comics, you might have figured out the three identical answers.  But that only gives you the first letter of each answer.

For those who do not know much about comic books and superheroes (Storm being the only female of the six mentioned above), you can find the answer since the first letter of each answer spells the word three times.  If you get any answer correct that gives you the four letters, you will have the series down.  Then knowing the first letter, you can go back to the questions that you missed.

The Questions:

My mother would not let me read comic books.  I could read the Sunday comic strips, and I had to read Peanuts and Dick Tracy before we went into the church for Sunday school (mainly because my mother would throw away the comics when we got home).  My mother preferred that I read the classics, and even then I preferred the large-than-life heroes like the Three Musketeers, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and Sherlock Holmes.

But my introduction to Superman was the old television show with George Reeves as Superman.  For Batman, there was the classic television show with Adam West as Batman and so many great actors as the villains.  But my mother’s mother was my partner in crime.  She would give me an extra quarter for a Hulk comic book or Avengers comic book.  My favorites were the Fantastic Four.  MawMaw would then hide the comic books so that I could read them again later.  And yes, I read every word, including the “Bam” and the “Pow”.  Just like I read every “Ha” in Peanuts.  Since the comic books were continuing dramas, I never got a complete story of anything.

The Scriptures above talk about earthly heroes, a House of Heroes in Nehemiah, the only reference to this house in the Bible and the “Three”.  The Three great warriors of King David were recorded, and their exploits seem like they were superheroes.

But we have a superhero in our midst.  We do not have to pretend by escaping into the superhero world.  His name is Jesus.  He is better than a superhero.  He is God, the Son of God the Father.  He can perform miracles.  He is God and was God and in Him, all things were created (Colossians 1:16).

When we accept Jesus, Jesus comes into our heart and we become a new creation.  The old is gone.  That is super all in itself.  We get to be with Jesus forever in Heaven.  That is beyond super.

The Comic books, television shows, and movies may be fun and a nice escape, but I want Jesus, the real hero who saved my soul.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video.  Here is Michael O’Brien singing Peter’s Song.  Also known as Face to Face.

And here is the Peter Hollens, featuring Home Free, singing Amazing Grace.

And here is Caleb Crino singing Worship Song.

And here is Elizabeth sung by the composer, Jimmy Fortune.  It is not the Elizabeth of Luke 1, but is a beautiful song.  Jimmy Fortune is being helped by Rogers, Walker, and Issacs.
