Counting to Ten Quiz

All those who were skilled among the workers made the tabernacle with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by expert hands.

  • Exodus 36:8

The west end was fifty cubits wide and had curtains, with ten posts and ten bases, with silver hooks and bands on the posts.

  • Exodus 38:12

for a person between the ages of five and twenty, set the value of a male at twenty shekels and of a female at ten shekels;.

  • Leviticus 27:5

Kain, Gibeah and Timnah—ten towns and their villages.

  • Joshua 15:57

Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,

  • Joshua 17:5

This quiz is about the numbers one through ten.  There is a question, all from the Old Testament, regarding verses that contain these numbers.  I did not use ordinals, as in tenth, or I could have had a question about the tithe.  I did not use questions about verses that contained a larger number, like ten thousand, but something might happen ten times, as an example.

The questions are in numerical order.  Umm.  Meaning one, two, three …

The Questions:

10Who did Jacob claim changed his wages ten times?

A hint:  question nine is a giveaway, but give the official answer instead of what a lot of people called it.

When you hear someone say that you should count to ten, you are probably like me, it makes you a bit angrier than you already were.  I can count fast so… A hundred?  Nope.  Two, three hundred?  Maybe, by then it just gets silly.

When I used to take my wife to kidney dialysis, I timed the traffic light at the bottom of the hill where I used to work.  On Saturday, it often took two full minutes to cycle back to the green light.  On week days, it was more like 45 seconds.  Odd, I was counting far beyond ten and it seemed to add to the irritation rather than calming me down.  But it told me that they had a variety of timings programmed into that light:  workdays versus weekends, peak hours versus mid-day hours versus nighttime hours.

And thinking of counting to a fairly high number, I have not counted the number of cars in a train in a long time, but after about fifty cars going by, I thought about counting them just to be doing something…

Elizabeth Barret Browning wrote a sonnet entitled “How Do I love Thee?” and the next line was let me count the ways.  She might not have mentioned any “way” that you could count, but this sonnet was sonnet 43, so someone was counting sonnets.

I heard a stand-up comic quote: “How do I love thee, let me count the ways …  One-two-three-four-five!”

But could I count ten ways that I loved my wife, who passed away six weeks ago?

  • Her voice
  • Her wit
  • Her smile
  • The twinkle in her eyes
  • Her love for a man just because he was weird
  • Her insistence on not being a burden
  • Her insistence on keeping her men well-fed
  • Her penchant for learning every kind of craft imaginable
  • Her apologies when she scheduled having fish on Friday (a family joke since she spent most of her life as an ex-Catholic)
  • The way she could talk to someone for five minutes and have every name and birthday of the stranger’s family memorized
  • Her ability to know what was in everyone’s hand during a card game (loved if you were her partner)

I know, there are eleven, but the last one was irritating when you played against her, but that did not mean she always won.  It was just hard to beat her.
