This quiz is about the words “pot” and “pan.”  Pot can be found in the NIV 77 times, but Joseph worked for Potiphar and married Potiphera’s daughter.  And of course pot is in pottery, potter, etc.  Pan can be found in the NIV 41 times, but that includes such words as pang, panel, and panic.  There are less than ten references to a pan that you might cook from.

All the questions are from the Old Testament.  There are no mentions of a pan in the New Testament and the uses of “pot” all relate to pottery or potter.

The Questions:

1In the first reference to a pot in the NIV, the Israelites complained that if they were still slaves in Egypt, they would be sitting around a pot filled with meat.  To answer their grumbling, what type of bird covered the camp? And then something else covered the camp the next morning.  What is it?
2What type of offering belongs to the priests and can be cooked in an oven, in a pan or a griddle?
3At the tabernacle, bronze pots were used to carry ashes from what?
4Eli’s sons were scoundrels.  When an offering was made at Shiloh, the priest’s servant would do what to the offering in the pan, kettle, cauldron or pot?
5If a sin offering is cooked in a clay pot, what must be done to the pot afterwards?
6When Amnon pretended to be ill, through messengers, he requested his half-sister Tamar to bring him bread.  When Tamar arrived with the bread in a pan, why did Amnon dismiss everyone else in the room?
7When some men made a pot of stew, a worker grabbed herbs, a wild vine, and gourds, throwing them into the pot.  Later, they exclaimed that there was death in the pot, but Elisha took what to make the stew edible?
8God instructs Ezekiel to draw the city of Jerusalem on a block of clay and then place an iron pan between himself and the block of clay.  What did the iron pan represent?
9In the parable of the potter, Jeremiah describes a potter making a pot, but if he finds that the pot is marred in his hands, what does the potter do to the pot?
10When Micah talks of chopping them up like meat for the pan, who or what is “them?”

This quiz was inspired by my slow attempt to clean up the house and throw things away.  I got the kitchen table completely empty, and I polished it.  But then, I shuffled pots and pans around.  Our cabinets where pots and pans go are under the countertop and it is difficult, at my age, to bend down to find what I need.  Sure, I could get down on my hands and knees, but could I get back up!?  So, I have them in the drying rack, or on the unused eyes of the stove, or on the kitchen table.

But Aaaaagh! I just got the table clean!

Now, while I temporarily have the stove eyes busy, the table is again cluttered.  But if I move in with my son in Tennessee, I will probably not ever need a pot or pan again.

Decisions, decisions.

Other than the temporary cluttering of the table, the clean up is showing signs of progress, but I may have to find another gear to go faster.

That or reprioritize what I am cleaning up, throwing away, and giving away.

I was looking for a few things that I have yet to find, nostalgic things more than valuable, but I got the bright idea of getting down on my hands and knees to look under the bed.  There is animal life down there of the type I have never in my life seen.  I have seen dust bunnies, but this was bigger than any bunny that I could imagine.  In my defense, the bed was hard to clean underneath since my wife sat or slept in bed almost 24/7.

When I told that to my son in Tennessee, he said to save that part of the search for when the grandchildren came for the Memorial service.  That’s why he had them, for reaching in places he did not wish to reach.  I think he had the kids for other reasons, but why not let them battle the dust capybara.  Hey, it’s a king size bed; there might as well be king size dust rodents!

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video.  Here is steel pan music played by the Neal and Massy Trinidad AllStars Steel Orchestra playing How Great Thou Art.  What else could I do with the theme of pots and pans?!  And I doubt if you thought this great hymn could be jazzed up!

And I liked that so much, here is the Deliverance Steel Band with Bro Sample playing a solo of I Know My Redeemer Lives.  Wow!  As he changed keys, my eyes needed a tissue or two.

And here are Casting Crowns singing In the Hands of the Potter.

And here are the Perrys singing The Potter Knows the Clay.

And here is Judy Moore singing You are the Potter And I am the Clay.

I have wondered why I like writing quizzes so much. I keep coming back so that I can learn more. I keep coming back so that I hope and pray that you learn more. But sometimes, I just come back for the music. This groups of hymns and songs have touched me deeply.
