They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
- John 17:16-19
“Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Do not add to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
- Proverbs 30:5-6
Send me your light and your faithful care,
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.
- Psalm 43:3-4
“The ideology of relativism undermines the very meaning of truth. For something to be truth, it must be true at all times. If this weren’t so, then someone could lie and say that something was their truth. Perception cannot be allowed to determine truth. If it did, we would all be seeing through a different lens. We need an immovable Adamant who anchors our souls to the perspective of our Creator.
“As Christians, we cannot believe the truth is relative, because we believe the Truth is our relative, Jesus Christ, our brother, Cornerstone, Lord, and Adamant. God’s Word (Jesus) transforms us, while relativism conforms us.
“Being the truth is a very different matter than telling the truth or even describing yourself accurately. Even if it were possible for any of us to be completely truthful, we could never be the truth.
“We can tell truth.
“We can live truth.
“We can love truth.
“We can hate truth.
“We can deny truth.
“We can believe truth.
“But only Christ can claim to be the truth.
“Buddha had many true sayings, but he did not claim to be the truth. Buddha acknowledged he was a man in pursuit of truth. Likewise, Muhammad said many things that were true, but he did not claim to be the truth.
“Jesus didn’t say, ‘I pursue truth’ or ‘I am one of many truths.’ He said, ‘I am the truth.’ And when we say all roads lead to Rome (salvation), we call Jesus a liar.”
- Lisa Bevere, Adamant
Ms. Bevere starts this chapter with the fact that we are born with this deep desire to find the truth. People these days try to argue relativism, and that no truth is absolute, and everyone has their truth. I have heard someone at the beginning of a television show interrupt an interviewer to angrily shout that there is no objective truth. Everything is subjective.
My response each week, other than to mute the young person, is to think that this person’s parents wasted a lot of money sending their child to college so they could unlearn everything they had learned.
But the entire concept of relativism is a spiritual attack on God. Many people, who do not believe, may still get ill feelings about God, but if there is no objective truth and nothing is absolute, these non-believers can construct their own space where their personal truth is all that matters, no matter how insane it might be.
This chapter in her book begins with this quote:
“When I found truth, there found I my God, who is truth itself.”
- St. Augustine of Hippo
But why can we consider God the Truth?
I don’t know, but since God created everything, the heavens, the earth, everything that occupies both, our reality could not be a reality except for God.
The fact that God sits in heaven and reigns sovereignly. He controls some things that need to happen for Him to have His eternal will carried out, but He gives us free will within that umbrella.
And most people focus on the things of this world, but God created time. With a few miracles along the way that pertain to time shifting, He even makes momentary adjustments to His creation.
And while we are on the subject of miracles, God created the natural laws that govern this world, and thus, He has power of them also. Thus, through Him can miracles happen.
If these examples of God existing as Truth itself are not convincing, God sent the stars into the sky at the dawn of time so that thousands of years later, the Maji from the east saw something unusual and made a trek to Judea to find the Christ child. Wait! That star was put in motion before Adam ever sinned, before there was a need for a Savior, but God had foreknowledge and He programmed that tiny little bit into his Creation, and He inspired the prophets to write about the coming Messiah.
Why?
Because God, the Creator of everything, loves us. He did that so that if we trust in Him and His program, we will inherit a mansion in Heaven and the right to be called a son of God.
Now, if the physical world Creation, including time, is not enough… If setting everything in motion with the plan of providing a Savior is not enough… And out of all the things He created, He loves us, people who rebel against Him, people who cannot get out of their way by this problem of sin…
Then, will anything be enough to call God the Truth?
Each of the points that I have made have been attacked by those who do not believe God even exists, but if they were confident in their own beliefs, why are they so systematically obsessed with providing a fantasy version of our Origins, just to confuse those who do not think it through?
Lord, guide me. You are Truth. Help us to see that truth. And once we see You, we will be so awestruck, that we will wonder why we did not spend more time worshipping You and Your Awesome power and love. In Your name I pray. Amen.
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
