Who Got Caught Speeding Quiz

Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.

  • Psalm 79:8

“The fall of Moab is at hand; her calamity will come quickly.

  • Jeremiah 48:16

“Flee quickly away! Stay in deep caves, you who live in Hazor,” declares the Lord. “Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has plotted against you; he has devised a plan against you.

  • Jeremiah 49:30

This quiz is NOT about the word “quickly” although each of the Scriptures above have that word in them.  There are enough times that “quick” in various forms are mentioned in the Bible to write a quiz on the word, but this is a numerical quiz.  All of the answers are numbers.  For a big hint, the answers will be a number from one through seven.  With five questions in each subsection, the total for the subsection could be as low as five or as high as 35, but we can eliminate those answers.

To explain the quiz, I will tell a story.

Once upon a time in Quizland, there were three people who were going to a party.  They had to drive through a section of highway that was patrolled by a stickler for the rules.  It was patrolperson Betty Boo-Hoo.  The speed limit was 18MPH, but the only way that the three drivers could obtain any speed at all is for the taker of the quiz to get the correct answer to a question.  If the correct answer is 3, then they go 3MPH.  If their next question has a correct answer of 2, then they go 5MPH (3+2).  If you miss a question, their speed increases by seven MPH.  It would be so terrible for a driver to speed past Betty Boo-Hoo and get a ticket because a question was missed.

The ultimate question is who is the speedster(s) among the three people: Fred, Wilma, and Barney.  Sorry Betty was already taken.  More on the names after the questions section.

I taught for thirty years and I loved telling stories to illustrate something.  But I had this habit of naming the three people in the story: Fred, Wilma, and Barney.  People would snicker, but out of the hundreds of classes over those years, I only once had someone ask, “Where’s Betty?”

Of course, I am referring to the long-running cartoon show, The Flintstones.  The show actually started as a primetime television show, an experiment to see how it might work.

While telling the story of how I was put on the carpet because my wife got a speeding ticket earlier this week, this twist for a quiz popped into my head.  The way I worked out the mechanics of the quiz, with one person of the three, it does not make a difference if you miss a question, the person may or may not be clocked at a faster speed.  For one person, there is only one question that can be missed without changing the ultimate answer.  And with the third person, any missed question changes the result.  For those good in logic, you know how many speedsters there are, but don’t spoil it for those that did not figure that one out.

I told the story about my wife’s speeding ticket, but I had two over the years, with a couple of warnings.  With the first one, I was driving home from Texas to have Thanksgiving dinner at my parent’s house.  Since I had fallen in love with my wife, I was in the high-speed lane, daydreaming.  About the time a station wagon with a dozen children in the back passed me in the slow speed lane, the cop pulled me over.  I was not speeding; the lady in the station wagon was speeding, but I was in the high-speed lane and I was driving a sports car.  The ticket did not change my status with the insurance company in Texas, so I just paid the fine.

The other speeding ticket was when I noticed shaking at close to the speed limit in one of the lemons (cars that were in the repair shop far too often) we had over the years.  I was speeding up and slowing down to determine that it was consistent vibration at the same speed each time.  I was looking at the speedometer, and I knew I was not speeding, if at all, only one or two mph over.  The highway patrolman was running interference for a disreputable organization, trying to make sure we left town, but I was just passing through and I would have been gone in a few seconds (that small of a town) if he had not pulled me over.  Again, I just paid the fine, no points or penalties were assessed.  And the back tires on the car had multiple flat spots (some people calling them “square tires”).  That vibration cost me the price of two tires and $17.50 for the fine.

If you got the questions right, only Fred was caught speeding.  Any question incorrect for Wilma would add 4MPH to the speed and she would be speeding.  Barney had 6 for the answer of the first question.  If you missed that one question, he would be doing the speed limit exactly.  Any other question and he would be speeding.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video:  Before we get more serious, here is one of my wife’s and my favorite old songs.  My mother’s mother, MawMaw, had it on a 45, just like the one that is briefly seen in this video.  The Playmates are singing Beep Beep (or The Little Nash Rambler).

Here is Dan Aniscol and Krizel Comacho singing O Zion Haste.

And here are Chris Tomlin singing Gifts from God.

Here is the Asidors explaining why speeding up may not be the answer, singing In His Time.
