The Husband? Quiz

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

  • 1 Corinthians 7:1-16

This quiz is about the word “husband.”  Since last week’s quiz was about “wife” I felt it only fair, but since the first five questions of last week’s quiz were general questions about husbands and wives in the Bible, with a lot more references to wife than husband, this quiz will only be two parts.

The first half of the quiz will be about verses with the word “husband” in them.  The third part of the quiz will be basically “Who is the husband of …?”  Beware, the easier ones were all taken last week.

The questions in each part are in biblical order.  All the questions are from the Old Testament.  And one answer was in one of the questions last week.

The Questions:

 PART ONE
1In the first reference to “husband” in the NIV, the woman eats some fruit than what does the husband do?
2Thinking she would always be barren, what did Sarai do for her husband after living in Canaan for ten years?
3What can a husband do if he hears his wife make a rash vow?
4There was a certain man named Manoah. His wife was barren.  An angel came to her and required Manoah to do certain things for her wife to have a son.  Twice the angel came to the woman and not Manoah.  What son, destined to be a Nazarite Judge, was to be born?
5Hannah was barren and her husband was Elkanah.  She went to the tabernacle to pray.  She was in such distress in her prayers that Eli, the priest, thought she was drunk, but then, understanding her desire, Eli prayed for her to be blessed.  Who was her son, the answer to her prayers?
PART TWO – Who is the husband of …
6Keturah, who married this man after his first wife died and had several children with him, such as Midian, Jokshan, and grandmother of Jokshan’s son Sheba
7Leah
8Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, given to a son of Israel
9Zipporah, who was a daughter of a Midian priest, but is later characterized as a Cushite.
10Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim – a promiscuous woman

The passage from 1 Corinthians above is not just interesting, but it is sound advice.  Becoming a married couple is an obligation made before God.  While Jesus tells us not to make foolish vows, the wedding vows are extremely serious.  For my wife and I, it was truly until death did we part.

Did we get everything right? Not hardly, but we found our way through.  When we became empty nesters, my wife often said that I was more of a best friend than a husband, but I was, except for Jesus, the best best friend she ever had or would have.  I heard an interview with Bill Gaither once, and he and the interviewer both admitted that their wives were also their best friends.

But my wife made friends everywhere she went.  She had a new best friend almost every week if we were travelling.  So for her to say that one person was her best best friend had meaning rather than just repetition of a word for emphasis.

And notice that the advice that Paul gives is that when one makes a decision it is both spouses making that decision.  I have seen a lot of marriages with separate bank accounts, separate decisions being made, brand new car driving up in the driveway without ever letting the spouse know the other spouse was in the mood for a new car.  And almost all those marriages fail.  When God inspired Moses to put at the end of Genesis 2 that the man and the woman become one flesh that means major decisions, the rights over each other’s bodies, anything that affects the family.

And note how Paul starts this passage.  Sexual immorality is not a 21st Century phenomenon.  It has been around a long time.  And a happily married couple finds completeness in each other so that nothing else is desired.   Just as we keep our eyes on Jesus to stay on the straight and narrow path, we keep our eyes on our spouse so that we see no other.

10Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim – a promiscuous womanThe answer, chapter 1, verse 2-3

My wife often introduced me as her “has been.”  She would get a laugh out of that, but she relied on me for a lot.  When we fed homeless families at our church, they would ask me what I had cooked, and I would reply, “Oh, no, I didn’t cook anything.  I am just the pack mule, carrying everything in and setting the table for dinner.  My wife did all the cooking.”

Later, when my wife became too infirmed to cook for the homeless, rarely cooking for the two of us, I became the caregiver.  I took care of her needs up to the end.  I cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and drove her to kidney dialysis and doctor appointments.  And then on rare occasions when she felt better than usual (still lousy, but she could get around), we went on short day trips.

I think my point in writing this little remembrance is that just like a wife, a husband wears many hats.  I literally have a lot of hats, but the hats that I wore in being a friend, companion, and caregiver to my wife were the most precious hats I ever wore.

Powerful ending: “I think my point in writing this little remembrance is that just like a wife, a husband wears many hats.  I literally have a lot of hats, but the hats that I wore in being a friend, companion, and caregiver to my wife were the most precious hats I ever wore.”

By the way I totally enjoyed the songs you had for the wife quiz and this husband quiz. I am listening to that while I am studying. While I am taking a break from my prep to teach a greek class in April, I am reading your blog and it made me think about treasuring my wife more…
