I know.  You took one look at the title and wondered what on earth could this quiz be about?  The A Team?  Sure.  Not even thinking about the old television show, everyone wants to be part of the A Team.  But remember the old commercials about a car rental agency.  They were second, but they tried harder.  Maybe some of these people, whose names start with the letter “B” tried harder.  Okay, Baal-Zebub was a false god, not a person, but the people in this quiz should be more recognizable than some in the Scriptures above.  At least, I hope so.

The questions are in alphabetical order so that the order gives a hint if you miss one.  There are three of these people who are from the New Testament, all in a row as it happens.  There are two Old Testament women.

The Questions:

8Who was the twelfth son of Jacob (Israel), born of Rachel?  Jacob changed his name to this after Rachel died.

10Who was second in line to be Naomi’s kinsman-redeemer, but he got the first in line to refuse, so that he could marry Naomi’s Moabite daughter-in-law, becoming an ancestor of King David?

When I was growing up, almost everyone read the King James Version of the Bible, if you read it in English.  Until the day he died, my Dad prayed in the KJV language.  When my mother led the nightly Bible reading, we also read the Philips paraphrase of the New Testament, the RSV, and some of the newer “translations,” but it seemed a must to read the KJV after we read another translation.  Thus, by the time I became a Christian at seventeen years old, we had probably read the Bible 15 times from cover to cover at least.

In the KJV, the answer to question 1 would have a story about this man’s ass talking to him.  Because of American English, that could mean a donkey or a backward part of the human anatomy.  But after people in the back of the Sunday school class keep snickering, most modern translations translate the animal as a donkey.  This is still a miracle that a donkey talks to its owner, but the change is reflective in a more clearly defined separation between the donkey and the ass, developed after ass was the preferred word in the times of the KJV.  The ass is presently defined as a wild donkey.  Or conversely, since most donkeys in those days started out wild, the donkey is a domesticated ass.  Thus, although my perverse mind wants it to be ass, I have to nod toward donkey.  Until the donkey saw an angel on the road and veered from the road three times, eventually asking this person why he is beating him, the donkey is quite domesticated.  Even in veering off the road, he does not become wild.  If you saw an angel with a big sword blocking the road, no matter how domesticated you were, you’d head for the ditch yourself.

There are a lot of “B” names that I did not use.  The king in question one is Balak of Moab.

The two craftsmen that Moses employs to make the articles of the tabernacle are Oholiab and Bezalel.

And Benaiah is one of my favorite, least known, characters of the Bible.

Benaiah was one of David’s mighty warriors, but not one of the Three:

Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.

  • 2 Samuel 23:20-22

Benaiah was also the warrior who struck down Adonijah, son of David, who had set himself up as king before David had passed away.  Benaiah also struck down Joab, at David’s request for all the bloodthirsty things Joab had done, and for siding with Adonijah over David’s choice, Solomon.  Solomon eventually made Benaiah the commander of the army to succeed Joab.  As a warrior, he is worthy of remembrance.
