Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”
- 1 Kings 17:24
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
- John 8:32
But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
- John 3:21
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
- John 4:23-24
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
- John 14:6
“We make an idol of truth itself; for truth apart from charity is not God, but His image and idol, which we must neither love nor worship; and still less must we love or worship its opposite, namely, falsehood.
I can easily love total darkness; but if God keeps me in a state of semi-darkness, such partial darkness displeases me, and, because I do not see therein the advantage of total darkness, it is unpleasant to me. This is a fault, and a sign that I make for myself an idol of darkness, apart from the order of God. Now only His order must be worshipped.”
- Blaise Pascal, Thoughts (thoughts number 582)
I was thinking about writing on Blaise Pascal’s next thought in his book, Thoughts (Pensées). It was very short, and if I had to type it without using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), I wanted a short one. My old free OCR software lasted five years; I should not complain. I ended up having to buy some software and now I must learn how to best use it. And this longer thought seemed more interesting.
But looking at this quote, do we worship truth? The secular world worships the concept of individual truth and no objective truth. That is closer to Pascal’s warning that worshipping truth is better than worshipping falsehood. The world has gone crazy before our eyes, and many are flocking to the secular “temples” around the world to bow down to the lack of objective truth.
And I have written about my theory on that in that without objective truth, they can insulate themselves in a cocoon that does not include God, who is the Truth.
We can easily argue that God is Truth, but is truth God? That’s taking what Pascal wrote and turning it into a question.
In the study of logic, some arguments are not reversable. If you state that you have seen a cow and the cow is brown, you may be correct in your observation, but you can neither assume that all brown furry animals are cows nor can you assume that all cows are brown.
I should have made that illustration using black cows since most of the beef farmers in my youth had black angus cattle.
So, we worship God and God is Truth, but we should be careful about worshipping truth. We should worship God, but worshipping the number four because that is what two plus two is equal is rather silly, and the number four did not do me many favors over the years.
Jesus told us that one day we will all worship God the Father in spirit, since God is a spirit, and in truth. When the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and the others in the upper room, we have all had the capability of doing that since then. When Jesus comes into our hearts, the Holy Spirit provides that means of worship in spirit and in truth.
God is Love, and trusting in God in every little thing leads to where God’s truth is being revealed in our lives. And each time God touches us in that way, it is impossible to hold back the praise and thanksgiving.
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
