Do We Truly Seek?

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

  • Matthew 6:33

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

  • Luke 11:9-10

“’Beloved,’ said the Glorious One, ‘unless thy desire had been for me thou wouldst not have sought so long and so truely. For all find what they truely seek.’”

  • C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

“There are a dozen views about everything until you know the answer. Then there’s never more than one.”

  • C.S. Lewis, That Hideous Strength

When you look up a Bible verse to find the meaning of it, do you stop looking after the first Study Bible footnote?  Do you stop after the first commentary?  Oh, well, nothing can beat Matthew Henry, so if he says so, then …

Ummm.  I think I read that Matthew Henry died while working on the book of Acts and his assistant’s finished the commentary from his notes using his style.  So, is it trust in Matthew Henry and those close to him?

Some people may not like my Thursday morning Bible studies, but I quote a variety of scholars, theologians, and noted pastors, even Tony Dungy.  But I do so to not hammer one philosophy by one source.

In the Myers-Briggs Temperament Typology, there is a difference in each of us between the J and the P.  This means that the J uses very little data to obtain a decision that is unwavering.  But the P person can never really firmly stand upon a decision because they know there is more data out there.  I tend to be more of a J person.  But as the saying goes, when I have an off day, I can occasionally find myself “P-ing” all over the house.

But in truly seeking God, we must go outside the logical realm, the intellectual realm, and the physical realm.  God is a spirit, but whoever truly seeks, will find.

Are there many ways to search for truth?  Possibly, but as Lewis’s second quote states, once we find the answer, there is only one answer.  Those that believe in relative truth have never started seeking.  They give up without starting.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.

Thanks, Mark. I’m generally a J person, but will definitely go further when I need to.
