I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
- Psalm 2:7
Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
- Psalm 2:10-12
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
- John 20:30-31
The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.
- 2 Samuel 1:11b-16
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
- Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah 9:6 ” Notice that Isaiah said a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us (emphasis added). This tells us that Jesus had to be born as a child to come to us, but he is also the preexistent Son of God who was given to us.
Here again we see the ‘near’ and ‘far’ aspects that frequently occur in Old Testament prophecy because Jesus was born two thousand years ago as a child, but the government of the universe has yet to be placed on his shoulders. This will happen at his coronation as King of kings in the millennium.”
- Tony Evans, The Tony Evans Bible Commentary
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
- Apostle’s Creed
The Message
Jesus is 100% Man and 100% God.
He is the Son of God, a member of the Trinity.
In being God, perfect, then He is qualified to be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all who believe and trust in Him.
Note that in the 2 Samuel Scripture above, the Scripture says that if he does something wrong. Jesus did nothing wrong. This covenant covered the eternal kingdom of Jesus Christ and what could have been Judah’s kingdom if Solomon had not strayed. Yet, for the sake of David, the punishment was postponed to Solomon’s son, Rehoboam.
But in that same covenant, God speaks of a kingdom that will last forever. Thus, part of this covenant was conditional for the earthly line of David, and they failed. But God maintained the bloodline so that Jesus would be the offspring of David with an eternal reign as king.
There will be more on the word “Lord” next week.
And now let us sing.
The following song is There’s Something about that Name. This is sung by Gaither Homecoming Gathering at the Cove, Billy Graham Training Center.
Closing Prayer
Dear Lord,
We believe in You. We trust You. In You we find life, freedom, and strength. Without You, we are nothing. In thy Name we pray.
Amen
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
