Lesser Evil – love it or leave it?

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22

Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary:
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

The title is a brand of popcorn snacks.  I like their original flavor.  It only has three ingredients: popcorn, coconut oil, and Himalayan salt.

I think the coconut oil used in popping the corn gives it a unique flavor.  But I wonder if the claims are true: lower calories, less fat, etc.

This is not a paid advertisement or a plug for the product.

I think that Himalayan salt is marketing hype.  If you do an internet search, there is no significant difference in regular salt and Himalayan salt.  Himalayan salt is a coarse-grained pink salt mined in Pakistan, for the most part.  The minerals that make the salt pink only amount to a couple of percent, so you are not getting a significant amount of added minerals nor are you really reducing the sodium chloride content.  Himalayan salt is not iodized.  But the less density is due to the course grain.  So, if they measure by volume, you have less salt in the finished product, but then it is not as salty.

Again, I like the stuff, but I do not like the hot flavors.  My dietary restrictions mean that I cannot have the garlic flavors either.  But the original is good.

But now to why I wrote this.

Why are we enamored with “less evil?”  Should we look at no evil at all?

I know their advertisement gimmick.  More flavor, less fat, less calories, etc.  From a dietary standpoint, it is better for you than much of the other snacks out there.

But the thought of less evil puts our minds into the mode of “a little evil is not bad.”

The Scriptures above disagree, and I only quoted a couple.

While you might go for this popcorn as a “healthy” snack, we must focus on Jesus.  We must turn from evil regardless of whether the world is saying that this is less bad than something else.

While foods with more nutrients and less bad stuff might be good for our bodies, our minds should reject “less evil” in every endeavor of our lives.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
