Teach Your Children Well Quiz

Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.”

and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.”

  • Leviticus 10:11

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  • Deuteronomy 8:20

He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar.

  • Deuteronomy 33:10

The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.” So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”

  • 1 Samuel 14:12

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

  • Psalm 86:11

I have been in an instructional mode lately.  Then it dawned on me that I could do at least one quiz on the word “teach” and another on “learn.”  There are over three times the number of references to teach as there are for learn.  Does that mean we need to be repetitious?  Repetition helps in retaining what we learn.

The questions are in Biblical order, but not necessarily in a chronological order.  All questions come from the Old Testament.

The Questions:

2Who said to God, “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways …”?

4In whose farewell address did this man say that he would not sin by not praying for Israel, and he would teach them what was good and right?  They should fear God, but if they persist in doing evil, they and their king will perish.
5For what occasion did Solomon pray for God to teach the people the right way to live and bring rain to the land God had given his people?
6While the Assyrians exiled the northern tribes, they also deported people from other conquered nations to Samaria, but they were being attacked by lions and such things.  What did the Assyrians do to teach the foreign settlers in Samaria about the God of Israel?
7David set aside men to be musicians, among them were Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman.  How did they determine each person’s duties?
8Asa’s reforms in Judah were followed by Jehoshaphat who did what to teach the people how to worship God?
9What demonstrated skill did Ezra have for Artaxerxes to choose him to go to Jerusalem?
10The Proverbs start with a plea for the son to heed the instruction of his father and not to forsake whose teaching?

When I thought about teaching and learning, I was very interested in the first two uses of “teach” in the NIV.  Moses mentions being slow to speak, and God says that Aaron can be used.  God would teach them what to say.  Then God, through Aaron and Moses would teach the people what to do.

Having spent thirty years in industrial training, every task boiled down to a set group of skills and the knowledge to perform the task.  In other words, the “what to say” is the knowledge that is needed.  The “what to do” is the skills to perform the task.

Often, we think we have learned how to do something, even when it is teaching someone else what we know, but God already knew how to teach others.  While Aaron and Moses were the ones talking, it was God doing the teaching.

I spent thirty years teaching, writing textbooks, developing computer-based training applications, etc.  I guess I should throw in “bottle-washer” and the guy who had to mop the floor on occasion.

I think I know what caused me to go down this path of writing a quiz on teaching (with more that may come soon).

I was thinking about one of the people at my last job that did not like me.

When you run an engineering company that builds a large piece of capital equipment, one of your biggest money makers is being called back over the years to fix the equipment when it does not work properly.  Often, the thing that is messed up is extremely simple to fix, if only the customer understood how the equipment worked.

But wait, the customer pays a fairly high price to have you teach them how to check for basic things that are easy to fix.

But engineers are usually lousy teachers, and they are not motivated to learn how to be good teachers in that the money maker jobs included one day to fly to the customer site.  One day to listen to the customer complain about what was wrong.  One day to pretend to check a variety of things that were not the problem but spending thirty seconds fixing the problem.  And then another day to fly home.  Four workdays of overpriced engineering hours for a thirty second fixing of the problem.  In most cases, the problem wasn’t that easy to fix, but I knew of such cases where the engineer spent all week not fixing things and knowing it was a thirty second fix.

Then enter an engineer whose passion was teaching the customer and empowering him.  Those week long trips for a thirty second job dried up.

So, that “enemy” was naturally made by my zeal in doing the assigned task properly.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Crosby, Stills, and Nash singing Teach Your Children.

Here are the Asidors with One Day at a Time.

Here are the Asidors (children) singing In His Time.  Not only does the song talk about God teaching us in His ways, it is sung by children, passing on that passion from one generation to the next.

The first song is not a Christian song.  And it talks about parents and children and the “hell” that they go through.  I would not characterize it as hell in that Hell will be infinitely more terrible, but trials, troubles, tribulations, and tests of faith can feel really bad while enduring them.  And when God is not there to regulate how bad it gets, it would be worse.  Note: Satan must have permission to test us.  This comes out in Job 1 and 2, but some think when Jesus tells Judas Iscariot to do what he must do, Jesus was really talking to Satan who had indwelled Judas at that moment.  So, obeying God and praying for the hedge of protection are important things.

But let us not trivialize hell to any trouble here on earth.  Better yet, let us not think of Hell at all by accepting Jesus into our hearts and surrendering our will, trusting in God’s plan for our lives.
