I thought I might do a series of quizzes on the “seven deadly sins: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth.” Looking strictly at these seven words, one is not used in the NIV, and another only used once. But they have synonyms that are used.
We will look at “Pride” first. I may use verses that have the words “Pride, proud, arrogant, haughty.”
The questions are in Biblical order. Only two questions are from the New Testament.
The Questions:
| Question | Bible References | Answers | |
| 1 | If the Israelites disobey God, what will cause the sky to become like iron and the ground like bronze? | ||
| 2 | In whose prayer does it say, ““Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.”? | ||
| 3 | When King Amaziah soundly defeated the Edomites, he became drunk with power. He wanted to go to war against Israel, and King Jehoash of Israel warned him about such a foolish attack based on his arrogance. What happened next, and what did an unnamed prophet chastise Amaziah for having done? | ||
| 4 | Pride goes before destruction, but what type of spirit goes before a fall? | ||
| 5 | Solomon says in Ecclesiastes that the end of the thing is better than the beginning, but what is better than pride? | ||
| 6 | When Isaiah tells Jerusalem that they will be rolled into a little ball and thrown into a foreign country, Isaiah asks them if they will still be proud of what? | ||
| 7 | What great power does Jeremiah call “you arrogant one” and then prophesies that their day of judgment will come? | ||
| 8 | Daniel reminds the new king of Babylon of when a former king had an arrogant heart, he was stripped of his glory and given the mind of an animal. Who was this former arrogant king? | ||
| 9 | For believers in humble circumstances, they should take pride in their position, but who should take pride in their humiliation, fading like a wild flower? | ||
| 10 | Which author of at least one epistle wrote, ““Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.”? |
Let’s look at question 5.
You can derive the answer through logic. The end is better than the beginning.
With that in mind, pride does you no good at any point along the process.
But, they have no foreknowledge as God has. You do not know the end. Is it within a week? A month? Ten years?
There is a fruit of the Spirit that sees us through when we do not know when that end will be.

Now let’s look at question 6.
The world is at war at the moment. We may not have a “World War” that is declared, but all that is necessary is to “connect the dots.”
Our focus is in the Middle East, but not far north of there, the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues. We must not forget those people on both sides that are suffering.
But then we should notice the undeclared war against Christians in Nigeria. Tens of thousands are being slaughtered with no opposition. One of the largest Christian nations in Africa is disappearing before our eyes, and the media, and most governments, are ignoring it. Can anyone tell me if the region of Azerbaijan that was mostly Christian still exists after an ethnic cleansing? It is not on the media anymore and barely made it on the News when churches were being bombed.
Add the civil wars and other armed conflicts, sometimes with militia forces, that are raging on every continent. The fighting may not be daily, but Jews and Christians are especially being targeted.
Isaiah is saying that might does not make right. Beware of what you have your pride in. Is it your might and military power? Or is your strength in God?

Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Tim McGraw singing Humble and Kind. This is not a Christian song, but it could be. We can humble ourselves without God in our hearts. The world would be a better place, but we cannot gain salvation from being humble and kind. But oh, so many Christians, or people calling themselves Christians, forget that God does not particularly care for the arrogant.
Here are Matt Redman and Tasha Cobbs Leonard with Gracefully Broken.
Here is Daniel Cha singing Humble My Heart.
I think Daniel Cha hits one out of the park here. As we look at our lives, we find that no matter how hard we try, there is some spot in our core that still makes us proud. Yes, we should be confident and do God’s will in this world. But for most of us, it is not within us to be humble within our own power. God must humble us. But beware, if you resist, even a little, it might get humiliating.

Thanks for the comments. My d-i-l was asked to move to Paris. She is a dog groomer, and I think they may be building a Pet Smart there. With my grandson starting at UT Martin in the Fall, she is thinking about it.
