Lusting does not have to be heterosexual desire. It does not have to be sexual desire of any kind.
“He that but looketh on a plate of ham and eggs to lust after it hath already committed breakfast with it in his heart.”
- C.S. Lewis, Letters to an American Lady
In looking over the Scriptures that speak of lust, lusting after idols is often a theme.
We still make small images out of wood, ceramics, etc. My son purchased carvings in Washington state made from Mount St. Helens ash. Having a few on a shelf do not constitute idols, but if we desire them greatly, at what point does that desire become worship?
I have looked at pretty ladies over the years. Sometimes, I take double takes due to their beauty, but there is no thought of taking a strange lady that I meet to bed. I do not worship the thought of having her.
I had a friend that I worked with, and he did the most absurd things. He would bend over as a lady walked away to enjoy the movement of the woman’s hind quarters. I asked how that squared with his devout Christian beliefs, and he shrugged. He was “just looking.”
But all that looking that we do distracts us from looking at Jesus.

And when does the admiration of something desirable become desire?
When does the desire take over our thoughts, so that in times of quiet reflection, we think of that desire rather than thinking about God, or even what we might fix for supper?
And once that desire becomes more important than God, do we act upon that desire?
Or do we admire from afar, thinking that we are “safe?”
But in our “safe place”, is our heart worshipping the thought of the thing we desire?
Lust is a slow killer of our souls. A look, admiration, a desire, a distraction, and then things much worse.
To not stumble on this journey of faith, we need to keep our eyes on the prize. Keeping our eyes on Jesus.
