A Speech Half Remembered

In my recent trip to visit the grandchildren, the oldest of them went with me to Nashville, to sell used books and games.  One of the books that I purchased in return was 100 Bible Verses That Made America by Robert J. Morgan.  As we approach the 250th anniversary of the birth of the USA, I thought I would do a condensed mini-series on some of these verses, four posts per week for a few weeks – maybe not all 100 verses.

To explain the title, too often a secular historian sees something about Christianity and he leaves it out of his history book.  I have driven past the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, but I have no need to stop.  I was told that they copied FDR’s speech completely, except they left out four important words “so help us God.”  Why see a memorial to altered history?

But with Patrick Henry’s speech, we memorized the last sentence.  We learned that Patrick Henry gave the speech to the Second Virginia Convention.  We learned that this convention was more than a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed.  We might have heard the convention was held at St. John’s church in Richmond, VA.

But quoting Scripture was something you only learn by checking out a copy of the speech.  In fact, the Scripture puts the final sentence into context.  The USA was already at war.

We have allowed people with an agenda against God to rewrite our history books, and there is no wonder that people can say with a straight face that the USA was not founded on Christian beliefs.  It was, but for the past 100 years, the textbooks have slowly changed until there is little truth left in some sections of the history.  Nothing about Christian values, but a lot about finance.

If we cannot right the ship and have the truth put back into the education system, may we stand firm in our beliefs and our faith in God.  This last stand will be under attack sooner than you think.  Thus far, we have taken too many of these attacks sitting down.

In the end, God is sovereign, and the textbooks mean little in God’s overall plan.  As the secular world goes down the latest fad idea’s rabbit hole, Christians need to stay the course and keep our eyes on Jesus.
