Do they teach children how to recite all the books in the Bible in order? My wife, growing up Catholic, had no idea where the books in the Bible were. She fell in love with a Bible that had tabs. Even after years of reading the Bible, she could not remember the books in order.
This quiz has ten lists of Bible books. In each list, a book is missing. The question in each case is: “What is the missing book?”
Due to the nature of the quiz, there will be no Bible Reference Section.
The concept can be used in a few different ways.
The Questions:
| Question | Answers | |
| 1 | Genesis Exodus Leviticus ? Deuteronomy | |
| 2 | Joshua Judges ? 1 Samuel 2 Samuel | |
| 3 | 1 Kings 2 Kings 1 Chronicles 2 Chronicles ? Nehemiah Esther | |
| 4 | Job Psalms Proverbs ? Song of Solomon | |
| 5 | Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekiel Daniel Hosea ? Amos Obadiah | |
| 6 | Jonah Micah ? Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi | |
| 7 | Matthew Mark Luke ? Acts | |
| 8 | Romans 1 Corinthians 2 Corinthians Galatians ? Philippians Colossians | |
| 9 | 1 Thessalonians 2 Thessalonians 1 Timothy 2 Timothy Titus ? Hebrews James | |
| 10 | 1 Peter 2 Peter 1 John 2 John 3 John ? Revelation |
A meaningless hint: The books that are missing are random. They do not spell anything. But none of the numbered books are missing, that is books like I Samuel, 2 Thessalonians, or 3 John.
When I was in elementary school, we had a Sunday school teacher who had us memorize the books of the Bible in order. Why? We would then divide these books into logical groups. For example, Question 4 contains the poetry books or wisdom books. Questions 5 and 6 are the prophetic books.
But not long after, the assembly that we would have before breaking into our individual classes would have a song, a prayer, and Bible verse challenges. The teacher in charge of that would call out the book, chapter, and verse and then we would raise our hand when we had it.
This simple exercise, prepared us for life, in a way. We were reading key verses that were often memorized, but when someone said to look in Jonah, chapter 3, we could find it quickly.
But, I wonder if those skills are necessary? Search engines can find the chapter faster than we can flip through the Bible, even if we are very good at knowing where that book is located.
It was in the aftermath of the COVID lockdown, but our church bulletin has the lyrics of the hymns and the Scripture passages that the pastor will use in the sermon. We do not need to look either of them up. I think they were worrying about someone coughing into the Bible or hymnal and then someone else fanning through the pages to find something. But the habit has continued.
With that change in our bulletin, the pastor made an announcement on the Sunday after vacation Bible school. They had removed all the hymnals and Bibles from the pews due to some activity that VBS did. They did not have the time to replace the books, which were stacked in the back of the sanctuary. Upon the announcement, two elderly people got up and went back to the stacks to get one of each book. Maybe they did not feel comfortable without the Bible and hymnal at arm’s reach.
But many modern contemporary services forget the bulletin altogether. They have everything on large screens all around the sanctuary. Or do they call it a sanctuary?
But alone on an island, with only the Bible to read, you might need to find a verse in Zechariah. Hmmm, now where is that book?
Oh, I almost forgot to mention a hint. The Scriptures at the beginning of this quiz provide a hint for the answer of one of the questions.

God did not give us His Holy Word for it to collect dust on the end table. It is there for us to read and learn more about Him. But if I could only remember where that book of the Bible is…
