At the time of writing this, I am in a stupor from sugar overload.  A couple of days ago, I hosted our church’s prayer fellowship.  It is a monthly meeting to update the prayer list.  Then daily updates (if necessary) can be penciled into the margins.  If you are going to have to work hard for an hour and then pray hard for the next month, you might as well have some sweet treats and an hour of light-hearted conversation before the serious work starts.

And I was eating the last of the leftovers two days later.

I had treats that someone from biblical times would not understand.  It was very sweet.  And it had a fruit topping.  The name of the dessert is ten letters, and in the midst of my sugar rush fog…  Actually, I had to take a nap, so I am in the down time after having too much sugar.  …  Where was I?  The idea of this quiz seemed natural.

The answers to each question is a name of a person in the Bible.  The first letter of their names in English spell this dessert.  Thus, the questions are not in biblical order.  Two people are from the New Testament.  Only one of the names is that of a woman in the Bible.

Have you ever been a member of a church that almost worships the stomach?

After a while, you realize that if you do not offer some food, even with a free will offering to counter the cost, you won’t get a very good crowd.

Maybe that is how the fellowship hour prior to a prayer meeting got started.  I had this dessert – the answer to the quiz with a strawberry crumble topping – absolutely decadent.  I had blueberry muffins if they did not want that type of dessert.  And I had berries, although not all are technically berries.  I did not know if someone disliked one or thoroughly craved another, so I filled one bowl with strawberries, another with blueberries, then blackberries, and raspberries.  With the offered whipped cream in a can, It was a patriotic fruit bowl – red, white, and blue.

From a culinary point of view, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are all berries.

From a scientific perspective, only the blueberries qualify as a berry, along with a banana, a tomato and a watermelon.  It has to do with the “fruit” coming from a single blossom and the seeds are inside.  The blueberry qualifies, one berry per blossom and the seeds are inside.

Strawberries are aggragate fruit where the “seed” is actually the fruit, definitely on the outside.  Thus what you have is a cluster of seeds that are delicious.

Raspberries are drupelets, while each individual bump of a blackberry is a drupelet.  I always heard the term “drupes” used when I was growing up, while picking from the wild blackberry vines and eating half of them before getting back to the house to take a shower.

I have no idea why you get a bad case of chiggers when you pick blackberries.  It must be a symbiotic relationship between the blackberry vines and the chiggers, maybe one attacking the pickers to protect the other.  A symbiotic relationship in that if you do not shower immediately after returning home, you will have tiny red bumps all over your legs, especially where sweat gathers, from chigger bites – one of those “no-see-em” bugs, but boy howdy, do the bites itch!!!!

Maybe I got a little error in those descriptions, but it is a fun bit of trivia.  When they start talking about “ovaries” my brain fogs up, but maybe that is still the after effects of the sugar.
