It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.
- Deuteronomy 13:4
In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait expectantly.
- Psalm 5:3
I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
- Psalm 116:1-2
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.
- Jeremiah 33:3
“If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.”
- Malachi 2:2
The verses all have to do with listening and heeding the message. Listening is not enough; we need to obey. They may not have the word “listen” in them.
This is going to be a matching quiz. Under the Question column, there will be the first half (roughly), of a verse. In the answer column, there will be the second half (roughly), of a verse. I say roughly in that I would hate to make the quiz so that you could solve the quiz by counting the words.
The question column will be in biblical order. The answer column will be in alphabetical order.
The Questions:

When you have that person who never thinks you ever do anything right…
I am speaking about a parent, a coach, a teacher, someone in authority…
You tend to listen enough to pass the quiz afterwards. There will be one in one way or another, but to be honest, you become artful in not listening.
My wife said I was a little like our children, I could selectively hear.
When you have been abused verbally, that is a defense mechanism.
I never had a lot of praise. I suppose if you got nothing but praise, you could filter that out, but would you want to do so?

Thinking of the question just before the Bible References, if you filter out the instructions and hear only the praise, you would never know how to improve.
When I was inspired to write on this topic, I heard about a tween child that was socially awkward and failed to listen to his teachers. As a tween, he had gone from elementary school where they give you the benefit of the doubt to middle school where they have no time for your nonsense.
But it is a deadly thing to listen to the praise and filter out the correction. What you do is that you become arrogant to the point of why listen at all?
But God knows our nature. All the talk about obedience is futile when compared to perfection. We won’t be there until we are with the Lord, but not actively listening means that we do not put God’s instructions into practice. We don’t try to obey because we listened only when God says “You’ve been good or you’ve done a good job” without hearing what could have been done better.
And when we were not listening when Jesus said, “take up your cross and follow me” or “love one another” or “spread the gospel to the ends of the earth” …
Then, we have missed the point. We cannot love without putting in an effort. The good works do not save us, but those good works are in part … how God knows we were listening.

The answer number in the Bible Reference column is the second half of that verse in the Questions section.
Whether you did well on this quiz or, ummm, not so well, for the first video, here is Teach me to Obey from Brea Jean.
Here is Lauren Daigle, with The Power of Obedience.
Here is David Wesley, singing Trust and Obey.
I was saddened when David Wesley said good-bye to his efforts to organize the huge virtual choirs from around the world. But praise the Lord, his old stuff is still there.
