Another Old Song – What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?

As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.

  • 1 Peter 4:2

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

  • 1 Corinthians 10:31

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  • Ephesians 2:10

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

  • Romans 12:1

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

  • Colossians 3:23-24

What are you doing the rest of your life?
North and south and east and west of your life
I have only one request of your life
That you spend it all with me

All the seasons and the times of your days
All the nickels and the dimes of your days
Let the reasons and the rhymes of your days
All begin and end with me

I want to see your face in every kind of light
Of field of dawn and forest in the night
And when you stand before the candles on your cake
Oh, let me be the one to hear the silent wish you make

Those tomorrows waiting deep in your eyes
In the world of love you keep in your eyes
I’ll awaken what’s asleep in your eyes
It may take a kiss or two

Through all of my life
Summer, winter, spring, and fall of my life
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you

Through all of my life
Summer, winter, spring, and fall of my life
All I ever will recall of my life
Is all of my life with you

  • Marilyn and Alan Bergman, What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life

This song debuted in 1969 in the movie The Happy Ending.  It was nominated for the Academy award, but the Oscar went to Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.

But the song seems to be sung in the wrong key.  This could be God calling us to glory, but the music feels bittersweet or maybe just bitter or maybe melancholy.

Sorry, I do not remember the movie.  The plot of the movie is that the downcast housewife wants freedom from her husband and daughter.  She escapes to the Bahamas, meeting other people.

And spoiler alert:  She returns and moves to the far side of town.  Her husband finds her and asks what went wrong.  After they spout the classic cliches of the bored married couple, she asks if they were single, would he ask her to marry him again.  The confused look on his face said enough.

So, the key for a song about that never-ending love that is nothing but good stuff is right for the movie, but wrong for the words of the song.

Yes, people get bored with marriage at times, some do.  But when you stick with that person, finding something to love in that person, you can find that you might not want anything else.

But when it comes to God, He will never let you go.

What are you doing for the rest of eternity?

Come spend it with me.

Here is Sarah Vaughn singing What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?

If God asked you what you were doing for the rest of your life, what would your answer be?  Would you hesitate with a confused look on your face?

The time may be now when God wants an answer.

Soli Deo Gloria.  Only to God be the Glory.
