I went to the eye doctor the other day.  He was not alarmed, but I have dry eye again.  A year ago, he did not mention the condition, so I am probably on the edge of having/not having issues.  Over the counter medicines, basically eye drops, and the warm compresses are working.  I’ll just have to keep doing it the rest of my life.

But that got me to thinking.  How often is the word “see” used in the Bible?  There is over a thousand verses with some form of “see” (see, sees, seen).  Most uses of “saw” (600) would be the past tense, maybe a rare wood cutting tool in there.  So, 1500+ references to the sense of sight, easily.

All these verses are verses containing the word “see, sees, or seen.”

The questions are in biblical order, with the last two from the New Testament.

The Questions:

1God brought the wild animals to Adam to see what?

5When the Israelites whined that they had seen nothing but manna, what did the Lord send them?

7The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah’s wife, using “see” to be “ensure”, he said see that you do not drink wine or anything unclean because you will bear a son, and he will be a Nazirite.  Who was this son of a former barren woman?
8When Isaiah cried out “Woe to me!  I am ruined!”, what had he seen?  Why did he think he was ruined?  And how did God fix it?
9When they saw the man who was healed standing among them, they could not say anything against Peter and John.  Who were they?
10The Apostle John saw a wonderous sight that the angel showed him.  When John saw all of it what did he do?

There is an old proverb, not a biblical proverb, that seeing is believing, but Hebrews 11 states that faith is the belief in what is not seen.

Second Corinthian 5:7 says that we live by faith, not sight.

Jesus told Thomas that he was blessed because he saw, but blessed are those that did not see and yet believe.

And in John 11, Jesus reminded Martha that because she believed, she was going to see the mighty power of God.  Then, Jesus turned to the tomb of Lazarus and raised him from the dead.

If you look for “Seeing is Believing” in a AI assisted search, you will probably get what I got.  Those words are in the Bible, but you have them backwards.

Seeing is not believing.  But believing is seeing.

I have marveled that I can see a particular situation and see God at work, while those who do not believe, see the evidence and find any excuse in the book, or beyond credulity, to excuse God’s handiwork as being an unexplained phenomenon.

I have a friend who posts biblical, conservative views on his social media page.

Each time that he posts something even remotely political, one of the people who reads it always adds a comment.  “This is not true.”  “This is a lie.”  “Untrue, get your facts straight.”

Notice, he never gives any evidence to refute what is said.  I believe that it is not being rude to ask a rude person to produce their proof that what was said is untrue.

There are untruths on the internet that are far left and far right.  Where do you get your information colors your opinion.  It even colors what you believe to be true or false.

But finally, the man said, “You need to read your Bible.”

I have heard this one too, sometimes by atheists or people of other faiths.  But have they read the Bible?  Do they have the guidance of the Holy Spirit to discern (or in other words “see”) what the context was when certain statements were made?

No, for the most part, they have no answer, they just yell louder.

Sometimes in those situations, with them ranting, losing control of their emotions, the best thing to do is to walk away.  We have made our point.  They have no answer to the question that, most of the time, they posed to us in the first place.
