Brotherly Love? Quiz

Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.

  • 1 Samuel 14:2-3

Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maakah as crown prince among his brothers, in order to make him king.

  • 2 Chronicles 11:22

Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king. Jehoram’s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and articles of value, as well as fortified cities in Judah, but he had given the kingdom to Jehoram because he was his firstborn son.
When Jehoram established himself firmly over his father’s kingdom, he put all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel.

  • 2 Chronicles 21:1-4

Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.

  • Nehemiah 4:23

“Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

  • Mark 3:33-35

This quiz is about brothers.  The word “brother” does not need to be in a verse, thus genealogies could establish a blood brotherhood.

The first Scripture above is kind of odd.  Ahijah wore an ephod.  He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub, son of Phinehas.  Ichabod was probably in the priestly line, but his brother Ahitub was not, otherwise, why throw that in there?  Or was Ahitub a half brother with a different father?

The next two Scriptures talk about a new king ascending to the thrown.  What Jehoram did to his brothers was done during the Ottoman empire to solidify the authority of the new ruler.

And the last use of brothers is Nehemiah saying that they remained on guard and ready to fight.  Even if they were not brothers in a familial sense, they were brothers in arms.

This quiz was inspired by the passing of my wife’s brother.  Out of nine children, four boys and five girls, two boys have passed.

It usually takes just a germ to develop into a quiz.  I can research from that point.  But this quiz was different in that I picked ten “brothers” that readily popped into my head.  I hope, as a result, you will not find any of the questions terribly obscure.

A couple that I thought needed some hints had qualifying comments added.

There is only one question drawn from a genealogy, but that is one with a few qualifying comments.

The last Scripture above talks of Jesus calling all who follow Him and obey his commandments His brothers, sisters, or mothers.  The familial relationship between God the Father and Jesus, the Son of God, is not simply a way of differentiating between persons of the Trinity.  When we are adopted into the family, Jesus is our brother and God the Father is our adopted father.  We are family.

You may not have had a good father figure to relate to here on earth, but I love what a dear friend said in his often-told testimony.  He said that he was an orphan, working to put food on the table for his younger siblings, and a man came by and asked if he wanted to meet his heavenly Father.  He went with the man and accepted Jesus as his Savior.  Even if you have a poor role model for an earthly father, you have deep inside you the desire to have that father that is loving and dependable.  God the Father fills that role, and we have a Savior, Jesus, for a brother.

Whether you did well on this quiz or, not so well, here is Brotherly Love sung by Jimmy Fortune, Bradley Walker, Mike Rogers, and Ben Isaacs.  Not every set of brothers is described here, but most are, I suspect.  My brother and I had nine years between us.  As a youth, I looked up to him, idolizing him, but the thick-as-thieves brotherly love of this song never really developed.

And I hope you liked that quartet.  Here is another, in a way about “brothers,” Where No One Stands Alone. After all, when we accept Jesus as our Savior, we never ever have to stand alone. We will have our brother by our side.

But sometimes we take up arms.  I mentioned the Nehemiah Scriputre above, Brothers in Arms.  Here is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, who wrote this song about brothers in arms, and how we should not war with one another.

And here are the Hollies, singing He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.  The Osmonds and Neil Diamond and many others recorded it also.  The title is the motto of Boys Town, outside Omaha, NE, USA.  The idea is that whoever we consider our brother is one whose welfare is our concern.  It seems we have lost this notion is recent years.  Can we see a “brother” in the eyes of everyone we meet?  Or do we see an antagonist?
