This song debuted in the 1964 movie Papa’s Delicate Condition.  Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, and Michael Bublé recorded the song.

The song was sung by Jackie Gleason in the movie, playing a man who really was irresponsible.  He was a drunk, thus, the delicate condition.

The song talks about how the singer loves the person of their dreams.  They might be irresponsible, or at least appear to be due to them being so much in love.

But God is responsible, reliable, dependable, trustworthy, and all those other things that we are too often not.

Yet, God loves us with just that type of “mad about you” love.

We sing the song to Him, and our love seems to fall short of that mark.

We should be head over heels more in love than the song expresses because we do not deserve the love that God gives us.  And we still do not earn it.  That is what Grace is all about.

Here is Bobby Darin singing Call Me Irresponsible.

One of the “un” defining words that the composer uses is unpredictable.

But I confessed one time to my wife that I tried very hard to be romantic, suave, debonair, and all those other fancy things, but I am very predictable.  I am going to screw it up at some point in there.
