For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
- 1 Corinthians 13:9-12
Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.
- 1 Corinthians 8:2-3
How little we know
How much to discover
What chemical forces flow
From lover to lover
How little we understand, what touches of that tingle
That sudden explosion, when two tingles intermingle
Who cares to define
What chemistry this is
Who cares with your lips on mine
How ignorant bliss is
So long as you kiss me, (and) the world around us shatters
How little it matters, how little we know
(How little we know, how little we know)
- Carolyn Leigh, (How little it Matters) How Little We Know
This song debuted in 1956, recorded by Frank Sinatra. It is often to confused with a song by Johnny Mercer in the movie To Have and Have Not.
When I chose this song to be the next “Old Song”, I had just seen a video about Christian teens standing up to an atheist teacher that was trying to convince a class that God did not exist. The girl asked how much of the knowledge of the world do we really know. The teacher said that since things were discovered every day, it might be as low as one percent. The girl asked why God could not exist in the other 99%.
The teacher dismissed the girl as holding onto an ancient myth, that was not backed by science. Then a boy in the class said that her belief that got did not exist was the same type of belief system, and it was not backed by science. In fact many scientists today will argue that a belief in God requires less faith than life springing forth from no life and that something came from nothing when science says that is impossible.
So, when I saw that I had this Old Song on the back burner, it had to be the next one.
We live in a world that is at war.
Yes, there are wars on nearly every continent on earth, some declared and some not declared, but the real war is a war against good and evil.
We need to be informed. Some things that sound like good ideas are just what Satan wants you to think.
Anything that takes our eyes off Jesus is not good for us.
There are too many distractions these days. I wrote about mobility issues some time ago, and they persisted because I would respond to distractions. I was thirsty, but not really. I was hungry, absolutely not. I needed to go to the bathroom, but when I got there nothing happened. Okay, that last one was out of fear since the mobility issues did not prevent me from getting around, just getting around quickly. The constant getting up aggravated the pain in my knee, that slowly went to the other knee, because everything was out of kilter.
I prayed and God helped me. As I was about to get out of my chair and away from writing, a voice asked, “Do you really need to get up?”
I cut down on the distractions and actually caught up some on my writing backlog.
Satan loves it when we are distracted; he likes hearing spinning wheels that go nowhere.
But maybe one reason that I liked this song is that it talks about “chemistry.” Sure, chemistry from the social interaction point of view, but for a chemical engineer, hearing chemistry in a love song is great!
And maybe it is that chemistry that has the elect gravitate toward loving God and the rest of the world never gets it. Only some will enter the Pearly Gates. I pray for a lot of people, and I know they will not all be saved. I wish I could go to the lab and create some of that chemistry, but God is God. I am not.
Here is How Little We Know sung by Frank Sinatra.
“How little we understand, what touches of that tingle That sudden explosion, when two tingles intermingle.”
I still do not understand, Lord, but I remember when that happened for me, and I will always be Yours.
Soli Deo Gloria. Only to God be the Glory.
